What is a process engineer?

Process engineers mainly concern themselves with work concentrating on the industrial processes related to manufacturing a large variety of consumable products, such as pharmaceuticals, plastics, water, energy, artificial materials, etc. The key to process engineering is in understanding the chemical reactions taking place within materials and then using that knowledge to install and manage control systems capable of running these processes.

Process engineer salary expectations

For a graduate, the average starting salary is just under £30k, but for senior chartered process engineers, or chemical engineers, it can be close to double that at £60k plus. The working hours are usually 9-5 with some overtime, and work mostly takes place in a lab or office. Obviously, where a process engineer is in close contract with products designed for human consumption, safety and hygiene is of paramount importance. Aside from attitude of caution, candidates are required to have advanced qualifications in chemistry or engineering in order to be considered viable for process engineering positions.
